EPFO can implement UAN generation and activation facial authentication

Employees who subscribe to the Pension Fund Body EPFO’s Social Security Program can now generate a universal provident fund account (UAN) and related services through facial certification, a move designed to enhance the lives of millions of EPFO subscribers.

This is part of a series of measures announced by EPFO in the EPFO 2.0 initiative to simplify processes and simplify procedures. Last week, EPFO introduced two key changes, removing the requirement to upload images checking leaves or proof of bank mailings, and eliminating the need for employers to approve seed bank account details with UAN.

In the new process, Aadhaar-linked Facial Authentication Technology (FAT) will be used to generate UANs using the government’s Umeng application, which the government expects to address the unavailability of the number of phones for subscribers in the EPF database, as well as mismatch errors in the personal details of UANs in the existing process.
“Employers and employees can now generate UANs through facial activation. This will be a key step towards contactless, secure and fully digital service delivery, said on Tuesday by members and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Up to now, UAN is mainly generated by employers by submitting employee (member) data to EPFO. The Ministry of Labor and Employment said that despite using Aadhaar data to verify the data, many mistakes have been made in other areas such as father’s name or mobile phone number. Due to these errors, many employees must update their data when filing a claim or other benefits.

According to the ministry, EPFO was allocated 12.7 million UAN by EPFO in 2024-25. However, in the last fiscal year, members activated 4.46 million UANs or 35.3% of the members. The ministry said this has brought the total number of insured persons in the 33 districts and Bihar to 33, reaching 470,000, and exceeding 1.84 million beneficiaries.
