Shabbir welcomes SC relief in WAQF case

Hyderabad: Government adviser and senior Congress leader Mohd Ali Shabbir welcomes the interim relief granted by the Supreme Court in cases challenging the 2025 WAQF Amendment.
Shabbir Ali, one of the petitioners in the case, said the court’s instructions stopped the center’s attempt to interfere with religious institutions. “The Modi government tried to impose unconstitutional changes on the WAQF institutions, but the Supreme Court has sought a reply within seven days and has imposed key restrictions. We welcome such relief.”
He said senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for the petitioner, who believes the bill violates constitutional assurances given to religious minorities. “WAQF land is not government property. These are individual contributions to the interests of poor Muslims and must be maintained. It is illogical and dangerous for the Centre to try to include non-Muslims on the WAQF board,” Shabbir said.
He added that appointing other faith members to the WAQF board could lead to unnecessary conflict and violate the spirit of religious autonomy. He demanded: “You can’t bring laws against one community only. If the government takes land possession seriously, bring it to all common law that applies to all religious institutions.”
