Kozhikode is preparing to announce that it is the first state to escape extreme poverty. A major step towards this goal is toward families identified as facing extreme poverty by handing over 32 vacant flat units to the Kalluthankadavu housing complex. Local Autonomous Minister MB Rajesh handed over the apartment at an event held in Kozhikode City Hall on Saturday (April 19).

In the speech, the minister said the project to eradicate extreme poverty is the first of its kind in the country, and no other state in India has adopted such an initiative. He praised the K-Smart software, which enables local agencies to provide services online. He added that accessing services online from anywhere in the world has greatly increased revenues for local agencies in the state.

Mr Rajesh also opened a project that builds homes for 25 families under the PMAY-LIFE plan. To do this, the company is buying 84 cents of land in Nellikode. Each family will receive 3 cents of land and 52.5 lakh rupees for building the house. Additional funds will be sourced through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) business organization. The 32 family-allocated units at Kalluthankadavu will also receive the necessary furniture and other amenities. The company will introduce its water and electricity bills during the designated period.

Through a survey, the company identified 814 people facing extreme poverty in cities. Various projects have been launched to improve them. As part of the program, food is allocated to 650 people per day, and 659 people receive medical assistance. So far, the project has provided a livelihood for 28 people. The goal is to announce the city’s escape from extreme poverty by November 2025.
