An eight-year-old boy from a village near Konandur in Tirthalli taluk died after being found infected with the virus that causes Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD).
About 12 days ago, the boy and his sister had a fever. The parents took them to Tirtahali’s General Hospital. When blood tests revealed KFC infection, parents moved both children to a private hospital in Manipal.
When the girl recovered, the boy succumbed to the virus on Thursday night.
Shivamogga district health official Nataraj told Hindu The two children were taken to Manipal about 10 days ago. They are undergoing treatment. When the girl recovered, the boy did not. “A death audit will be conducted to determine the cause of the death,” he said.
Viral infection is transmitted through ticking bites. People living in areas bordering forests are vulnerable to the disease. Those who visit forest areas are advised to apply tick insect oil to avoid infection. High fever, severe headaches, muscle pain and vomiting are common symptoms of infection.
