Elephant forms protective circles around calves after detecting earthquakes in California

Today’s video shows adult elephants Ndlula, Umngani and Khosi Huddling protecting around young calves, Zuli and Mkhaya.

In a moving moment that captures the heart online, a group of African elephants at the San Diego Zoo formed a protective circle around their young calves, just in time for the earthquake to hit Southern California.

The magnitude 5.2 earthquake that occurred earlier this week was reportedly perceived by elephants before humans felt any tremor. According to zoo officials, elephants are able to detect earthquake vibrations under their feet, allowing them to respond quickly to such natural events.

Today’s video shows adult elephants Ndlula, Umngani and Khosi Huddling protecting around young calves, Zuli and Mkhaya. Elephants create what experts call “alarm circles,” a natural act used to protect vulnerable members of the herd from potential dangers.

“This behavior is a natural response to the perceived threat of protecting the cattle,” the San Diego Zoo said in the title that came with the video.

The area experienced aftershocks about an hour after the major earthquake. The elephant repeated the behavior briefly again, and then calmly resumed its daily activities. Zoo officials confirmed that all animals, including elephants, were safe and had resumed normal activities.

The video sparked a wave of admiration on social media, with users praising the elephant’s wisdom, powerful intuition and emotional bonds. One user commented: “Elephants are not only wise, but also deeply caring.” Another user said: “Nature never surprises.”
