Elon Musk's Starlink gets key approval from the Indian government to launch satellite internet service

The government has granted licenses to two other players in the SATCOM space – Eutelsat Oneweb supported by the Bharti group and Jio Satellite Communications from Mukesh Ambani.

PTI reports that Elon Musk's satellite internet company Starlink has received major approval from the government to operate SATCOM services in India. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) issued a letter of intent after the company agreed to comply with licensing conditions that are crucial to national security. The government has granted licenses to two other players in the SATCOM space – Eutelsat Oneweb supported by the Bharti group and Jio Satellite Communications from Mukesh Ambani.

Starlink's model is based on a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, located about 550 kilometers above the Earth. Jio and Bharti announced an agreement with SpaceX to distribute Starlink's broadband services in India. As part of these agreements, the telecommunications company will sell Starlink's devices through its retail stores, and Jio also provides installation and activation support. They will also provide Starlink services to businesses, schools and health centers in rural areas. Starlink uses satellite constellations in low-Earth orbit to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to users around the world.
