With its vast satellite network, Starlink aims to provide seamless high-speed internet to hundreds of thousands of users across India.
Elon Musk’s star-striped link is about to transform India’s internet landscape through its lightning-fast satellite connection. According to a report by the Times of India, Starlink can deliver up to several trabytes per second, almost 80-90 times faster than existing services from competitors such as Eutelsat Oneweb and Reliance Jio-SES, offering only 30-50 Gbps.
With its vast satellite network, Starlink aims to provide seamless high-speed internet to hundreds of thousands of users across India. The necessary infrastructure is already in place and the service is now awaiting regulatory approval from the Ministry of Telecommunications (DOT) and the National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (Space). Starlink has obtained a global mobile personal communication with a satellite license through DOT and submitted the documents to the space, but some approvals are still pending.
Meanwhile, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES have received all the necessary regulatory gaps and are waiting for spectrum allocation.
Unlike traditional Internet services that rely on cables or towers, Starlink uses a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network to provide uninterrupted, high-speed internet. By January 2024, SpaceX has deployed more than 7,000 Starlink satellites, and there will be more expectations in the future.
A major action, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio announced a partnership with Starlink in March. Jio and Bharti will sell Starlink devices through retail stores, and Jio also provides installation and activation support. These services will cater to businesses, schools and medical centers in rural India.
To support its business, Starlink plans to establish three portals in Mumbai, Pune and Indore, Mumbai, and its presence in Mumbai. If approved, this could mark a new era of ultra-fast satellite internet across India.
