Emergency warning of little-known Australian legal plans to travel to Thailand

Australians are being warned that a law is considered one of the strictest laws in the world, which criticizes locals and foreigners for criticizing the Thai royal family.

American scholar Dr. Paul Chambers was sentenced to jail, his passport was seized and his visa and his job at Naresun University, as he was arrested at a webinar titled “Thailand’s Military Reorganization in 2024”, what does that mean? ”.

Dr. Chambers was charged in April with violating Thailand’s Lese Majeste Law, a bill that was sentenced to three to fifteen years in prison.

Although the webinar was not written or published, the professor was prohibited from leaving Southeast Asian countries under Article 112 of the Thai Criminal Code.

The lecturer is described as a visitor at the university and will first publish the webinar in Singapore in June.

“He is not allowed to leave the country, we are not sure why,” his brother Kit Chambers told Reuters.

Dr. Chambers is considered an expert in the relationship between Thailand’s military and civilians and other Southeast Asian countries.

In 2024, a Thai man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for his derogatory comments about the royal family.

The number of people accused of violating LESE Majeste laws is increasing, with at least 272 people being charged in recent years.

Thailand’s constitution makes the king with the “respected worship” of a palace that is regarded as a sacred and inviolable, or too valuable to interfere.

Maha Vajiralongkorn has ruled Thailand since 2016 and is the tenth monarch who led the country from the Chakri Dynasty.

He is known for his luxurious lifestyle and $43 million in wealth and his “hands-on” style of domination that contrasts sharply with his father who ruled for 70 years.

King Vajiralongkorn reportedly married his fourth wife, Suthida Bajrasudhabalakshana in 2019, and reportedly owns 38 aircraft, 300 luxury cars and 50 ships.

Australians were told to be careful of travel warnings before flying to Thailand.

“Images of insulting the monarchy, or defaming the monarchy – including bank notes with the image of a king – may result in prison term up to 15 years,”

Social media posts criticizing the royal family can also land an estimated 800,000 Australians flying to Thailand in hot water each year.
