Officials said Sunday that the Staff Selection Committee (SSC) has decided to implement Aadhaar-based biometric verification in all its upcoming exams to verify the identity of candidates on a voluntary basis. The new measure will take effect on recruitment testing starting in May 2025.

The SSC clarified that Aadhaar authentication will remain voluntary and aims to make candidates more convenient for candidates to check.
Aadhaar is a 12-digit ID number issued by the Indian Only Identification Agency (UIDAI) to all eligible citizens, based on biometrics and demographic data.
Officials explained that Aadhaar-based identity verification will help ensure that government job seekers do not forge their identities or use fraudulent means to appear on the SSC recruitment exam.
In a notice issued on September 12 last year, the Alliance Human Resources Department said it allowed SSCs to voluntarily perform Aadhaar identity verification. SSCs shall comply with all relevant provisions of AADHAAR (targeted financial and other subsidies, benefits and services laws), the Rules and Regulations established in 2016 and the instructions issued by the “Natural Identity Agency of India”.
The committee conducted seven prescribed open competition tests for all India, including the Joint Graduate Level Examination (CGLE), in addition to three limited sectoral competition tests.
On August 28 last year, the Personnel Department issued the same notice – the first notice of any recruitment agency – the approval of the United Public Service Commission (UPSC) to approve Aadhaar-based identity verification.
Hundreds of thousands of candidates emerged in government recruitment tests conducted by SSC and UPSC nationwide. Last year, UPSC also decided to use facial recognition and AI-based CCTV surveillance systems to prevent cheating and imitation in its exams.
UPSC conducts 14 major exams each year, including the prestigious civil service exam, which also selects officials from the Indian Administrative Services Agency (IAS), Indian Diplomatic Services (IFS) and Indian Police Services (IPS), in addition to the many recruitment exams and interviews each year to summarize the “A” and group ‘B’B group of the central government.
