You Season 5: Is Joe Goldberg a sociopath? This is what we know about the characters

While the creators have promised that Season 5 will be the end of Joe (played by Penn Badgley), they haven’t solved a problem until now – is the character a sociopath or a psychopath? Many fans have used terms interchangeably for Joe, thus distinguishing between term ambiguity.
Before your new season, let’s take a look at the role of Joe Goldberg and what he said.
Is Joe Goldberg a sociopath or a psychopath?
According to Healthline, the term “psychosis” is not a widely accepted clinical term or diagnosis. People often use it to refer to antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). According to Mayo Clinic, ASPD “is sometimes referred to as a social disease, a mental health condition in which a person always ignores the rights and feelings of others without considering right or wrong.”
People with antisocial personality disorders often deliberately make others angry or upset, manipulate those around them or treat them indifferently. They lack remorse, often violate the law, and become criminals.
Joe often breaks the law and ignores the feelings of the people he is obsessed with. He often doesn’t regret his deeds, such as when he killed Guinvere’s boyfriend Benji in Season 1. However, the characters cannot be diagnosed in a clean way. During the show, the incident described Joe being vandalized after his landlord’s death or refusing to kill Forty due to the importance of love for Joe’s partner. This shows that the character does have some empathy. So, Joe Goldberg is a complex character that is difficult to adapt in a diagnosis.
Kelly Scott, the therapist at Tribeca Therapy in Manhattan, told Business Insider in an interview that Joe may have an attachment disorder due to childhood trauma. “Joe would be a great example of a misdiagnosis,” Scott said.
Joe Goldberg is in you
The character initially began his journey at a bookstore in New York. When he was obsessed with one of the customers Guinvere, he began to manipulate the incident to appear in her life. This led to a series of events where Joe killed, lying and stalking those near Geneville to cement his status as a boyfriend. Throughout the season, Joe is attracted to different women, but his obsession and violent tendencies are obstacles to his happiness with any of them.
