Explosions on Sengulam Power Project: KSEB seeks advice from Central Institute of Mining and Fuel

Kerala Electric Power Commission (KSEB) will contact experts from the CSIR-Center Institute of Mining and Fuels (CIMFR) to address issues related to the explosion operation of the Upper Sengulam hydropower project. The explosion operation to build a tunnel for the Hydel project was stopped on February 17 this year after local residents attracted attention to safety. Despite meetings held at the Panchayat level, the issue has not been resolved.

KSEB hopes that CIMFR experts can propose a blasting mode to allow work to recover. KSEB noted that the tunnel is an important part of the Hydel project and any delay in its construction will affect the progress of the project.

The project area is located in the Idukki area. After debugging of the Sengulam Enhancement Program and the 60 MW Pallivasal Extension Program, the 24 MW project will use the Sengulam balance the remaining water available from the reservoir. The PGCCPL and the Aryacon Alliance have obtained contracts for civil and hydraulic work.
