Madras HC grants temporary expected bail to comedian Kunal Kamra

Chennai, March 28: The Madras High Court on Friday granted temporary expected bail to comedian Kunal Kamra, who is facing the enthusiasm to joke on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The court granted Kamra relief on the condition that he should be subject to the satisfaction of the judicial magistrate in Vanur, Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu.

Judge Sunder Mohan also issued a notice to the second defendant (R2-KHAR police) and posted the matter to April 7.

Kamra proposed that he moved to Tamil Nadu from Mumbai in 2021 and “has usually been a resident of the state since then” and he feared that the Mumbai police would be arrested.

The judge noted that the petitioner living in the Virupuram area arrested the arrest of the case registered in his case in the R-2 file.

The petitioner’s lawyer believes that the allegations against the petitioner were his comments in a stand-up comedy about Deputy Chief Minister “Naya Bharath”.

According to the prosecution, it damages the reputation of the deputy CM.

The lawyer further pointed out that the allegations are not kept under trial. He was unable to seek expected bail in Maharashtra.

The petitioner’s lawyer believes that the party members and ministers pose a life threat to him. He sought the expected bail to allow him to seek help in Maharashtra.

The judge cited the Supreme Court’s ruling, explaining why he was unable to sign the court in Maharashtra immediately. Therefore, he directed to issue a notice to R 2.

“At the same time, the court tends to approve expected bail by April 7,” the court said.

The 36-year-old stand comic made two calls to Mumbai police during Shinde’s latest show in Mumbai, which put him in trouble and sparked a huge ranks.

The controversy stems from the Kamra performance of the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, Mumbai, where he performed parody songs against Shinde. The bill has sparked backlash from supporters of Shiv Sena, who destroyed the club and the hotel where it was located on Sunday night.

Kamra was booked by Khar Police, and allegedly Shiv Sena Mla Murji Patel’s complaint allegedly made defamatory remarks against CM Deputy Prime Minister.

In his petition, Kamra has been working and touring with his latest tour, Naya Bharat, for the past year.

Theme and content include humorous but critical views on “Ambany’s Wedding,” the influence of Diwali – how the festival affects people, animals, birds and imitates songs”, a musical finale that adds an extra sense of humor to the show.”

He made a claim that he had innocently committed crimes against him and that he had been wrongly involved in the case.

Although FIR is registered in Khar in Mumbai, Maharashtra, he is seeking expected bail from Madras HC because he resides within his jurisdiction and is “concerned that the second defendant is about to be arrested in the hands of the second defendant if he is to go to Mumbai and seek conventional expected bail.”

“He is also concerned about actual physical harm and threats to his life and personal freedom in the event of arrest by the second defendant police, which was caused publicly by party officials in public places.”

He said he had no political affiliation and was a voice supporter in the implementation and protection of the Indian Constitution.

In the controversial show, Kamra performed the new stand-up comedy show “Naya Bharat” on a venue in Mumbai in February 2025 and uploaded it on his YouTube channel on the 23rd of that month.

On March 23, the person who claimed to be a political activist violated the so-called venue where the petitioner performed in Khar. On the same day, the Khar Police Department also received information from the complainant Andheri East MLA Patel.

The complainant alleged that in the above performance by the petitioner, he slandered Mr. Ekhnath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, who made a defamatory statement about his conduct. The complainant further claimed that the performance of the petitioners had damaged the partisan reputation between their political parties and the competitive hostile political parties. ”

He claimed: “It is necessary to mention here that the controversial songs/poems told by the petitioner did not name anyone, leaving only the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.”

Kamra argues that he has been threatened with physical harm and death on various social media platforms, even on his personal emails and phones since the date of the YouTube video’s release.

“Threats and warnings like this come out mainly from the Mumbai area. These are death threats and threats of harm to the lives and lives of my loved ones. The petitioner believes that if he goes to Mumbai on 31.03.2025, he will be afraid of his life and freedom.
