Fire opens in hotel in central Kolkata, one person dies

A fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Mechuan, central Kolkata on Tuesday (April 29, 2025). Cross fire trucks rushed to the scene, controlling the fire near the wholesale market Falpatti.
A man died after leaping out of a building and escaping the fire. The multi-storey building that broke out in the fire was a hotel on Madan Mohan Barman Street. There were residents in the hotel, and the fire broke out and panic spread among the people in the building.
Police and fire brigades have been repeatedly telling people not to panic. But at the same time, Manoj Paswan jumped out of the top to save himself from the fire. He was taken to a medical school hospital and pronounced dead.
Several people rushed to the balcony of the hotel and tried to land from the panic. The two were lowered by the fire ladder. As fire efforts continue, they may be trapped inside buildings.
He was taken to a medical school hospital after being injured. Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim visited the scene and took stock of fire protection measures.
The fires occurred in crowded areas where many shops were located, and it was a challenge, just like firefighting measures.
State BJP President Sukanta Majumdar expressed condolences to the death of the fire and urged the national government to rescue the affected people immediately, ensure their safety and provide them with necessary medical and humanitarian assistance.
