A well-known activist has been criticized by both political sides for his stance on abortion.
The NSW Parliament is reviewing an amended bill proposed by Greens MP Amanda Cohn to address the state’s “abortion desert” and remove barriers to ending pregnant women in the region.
During a long debate Tuesday night, opposition leader Marc Yan MP alleged in parliament that a prominent anti-abortionist threatened that he would be derailed if he did not object to the bill.
Activist Joanna Howe told him she “had no choice but to suspend my plan to oppose the Labor movement to lead a public movement designed to encourage grassroots to oppose you as a liberal leader,” Mr Speakman said in the privileged parliament.
“I won’t be bullying like this, nor will I become an Americanization of NSW politics,” he said.
“I will vote on my conscience and balance difficult and sensitive moral, social, moral and medical issues.”
Prime Minister Chris Minns has been supporting his political rivals, suggesting that Dr Howe has spread “a lot of misinformation and lies” on her social media channels.
This includes claims that the bill would “force all Christian and Catholic hospitals to close unless they have an abortion” – a claim that was debunked by AAP Factcheck in March.

Opposition leader Mark Speakman (pictured) escalated the charges against Dr. Howe on Wednesday, claiming that his five-year-old mother threatened to derail.
“Many good people in the community think that legislative changes are broader than they actually are,” Mr Means said.
Dr. Howe is a law professor at the University of Adelaide and a five-year-old mother, and is one of the leading critics of abortion nationwide.
She appeared last week at an anti-abortion rally outside the NSW Parliament along with former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher.
Liberal politician Jing Lee said she felt unsafe in front of “outside visitors” and later felt unsafe, and later she was later identified as Dr. Howe in Colonel President Terry Stephens.
In a video posted to Instagram on Wednesday, Dr. Howe challenged Minns Premier’s claims, threatening to sue him for defamation.
“He gave an example of emails he received about nurses and midwifes because they would lose their permits because they did not have an abortion. I’ve never said anything about it. ” she said.
“He said I lied to a voting record I had never made.
“My message to Chris Minns is simple: either come out and correct the record and admit you made a mistake and apologize, or you will hear from my attorney because I will sue you for defamation.”

Earlier on Wednesday, she promised to post an email she sent to Mr. Speakman, asking her followers to decide in a separate Instagram video: “Am I a bully or a Mark Speaker just a precious snowflake that can’t handle the democratic process?”
Health Secretary Ryan Park said false information and “malignant characters” are both characteristics of the debate.
“It’s just classic misinformation, people and nurses will suddenly relax, and suddenly, people will be forced to do something,” he told ABC Radio.
