Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shortened her official visit to the United States with a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir, which was killed on Tuesday (April 22, 2025), mostly 26 people, mainly tourists.

Ms Sitharaman is a member of the five-member Cabinet Security Committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who cut his two-day trip to Saudi Arabia and arrived in New Delhi on April 23, 2025 (23 April 2025).
The Treasury said in a post on X: “Union Secretary for Finance and Corporate Affairs SMT. @NSitharaman is shortening her official visit to the United States-Peru.
Ms. Sitharaman started her 11-day trip to the United States and Peru from April 20, attending the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank and the G20 Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank (FMCBG).
Officials said the terrorists attacked on Tuesday at a major tourist site in Pahalgam in southern South Kashmir, killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and several others were injured.
They said the deceased included two foreigners – from the UAE and Nepal – as well as two locals.
Ms Sitalaman condemned the attack, saying “there is no words to express sorrow” as she expressed her condolences to the deceased.
“I condemn the act of terror. I pay tribute to all affected families and friends of the deceased. A sincere prayer for the quick recovery of the injured.”
