Former MP Gorantla Madhav, 5 more charged with detention for assault
Former Congressman Gorantla Madhav
Principal Guntur District said former MP and YSR Congress leader Gorantla Madhav was arrested Friday with five colleagues for allegedly assaulting the defendants in police custody and obstructing the duties of law enforcement officers.
Guntur Special Mobile Court remanded all six defendants for 14 days and were sent to Nellor prison.
The incident occurred while police transported Chebrolu Kiran and was accused of making offensive comments to the wife of YSRCP head YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. When the police moved Mr Kieran from Mangalagiri to Guntur, Madhav and his supporters allegedly intercepted the police halfway through, pushed the police aside, and attacked the defendant.
Even as police managed to secure the defendant and continue to head towards the Gontur Regional Police Headquarters, the group allegedly followed the convoy, further attempting to intimidate the defendants and police officers. Mr. Madav and his colleagues reportedly attacked the defendant again and were detained.
The SP condemned the incident, stressing that such actions, especially former public representatives, could incite political tensions and disrupt public order. “No one is beyond the law,” Satish Kumar said in a press conference on Friday. He also said Mr. Madav’s background as a former police officer made his behavior particularly regrettable.
Police have registered a case under relevant chapters to obstruct tariffs, assaults and illegal parliament, with all six people being detained.
The arrested were: Kurava Gorantla Madhav, Anantapur district, Chigandi Ramesh, Sri Sathya Sai district, Talla Damodar, Anantapur district, Divivinti ShivaD Prasad, Chidagondla Shivayya (27)
