Thrikkakara municipality takes steps to check substance abuse

Thrikkakara Municipality, home to the region’s IT hub and a large number of guests, has decided to take steps to curb the spread of drunken substances, including drugs and other banned materials.

Chairman Radhamani Pillai said the council approved the establishment and deployment of the special municipal squad in a statewide situation where the use of prohibited intoxicating substances is shocking.

She added that police and the GST department were involved in forming monitoring squads and installing CCTV to determine where drugs were abused. Initially, the Council approved the procurement of 130 cameras at a cost of Rs 7 million.

Municipalities have identified sensitive areas near schools, universities, nightclubs, restaurants, gaming turf, which emerge throughout the municipality, as well as camps where guest staff are concentrated.

They hope to establish a full-time monitoring system and operate effectively before the start of the new school year at the end of May.

In addition to taking preventive measures, authorities will also interact with students and youth through awareness courses, campaigns and family advocacy to combat drug threats.
