The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will become the second government unit to recognize the right to a decent livelihood opportunity for transgender people. Previously, the police department hired many trans people in different roles.
The company is preparing to accept services from the Tasgender people to receive services from various wings under the direction of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
GHMC’s Urban Community Development Force organized a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of transgender people, whose recommendations and comments were to include a third gender in various roles of GHMC.
Other specialists Sneha Shabarish, Chandrakanth Reddy and Yadagiri Rao attended the meeting and conveyed plans not only to hire them in the company, but also to explore ways to provide self-employed opportunities.
Ms Sabarish said the gathering was part of a broader program that aims to create jobs that are in the interests and qualifying of transgender people. She added that GHMC will not only provide job opportunities within its department, but will also provide skills development training for jobs outside civic groups.
Mr Chandrakant Reddy urges trans people to choose areas that align with their educational qualifications, skills and interests and ensure targeted training will be provided to promote their employment.
He further explained that for those who are not in line with their jobs, GHMC is helping to form self-help groups to promote economic self-reliance. So far, three transgender SHGs have been established in the LB Nagar district and efforts are being made to connect them to the banking system. He encouraged more people to step up and join these groups.
The range of work roles available within the GHMC includes security guards in the park, subway stations and drinking reservoirs, green marshals in cleanliness drives, support for staff in water quality testing, street light maintenance and caregivers at Basti Dawakhanas, and transgender people can hire roles based on their quality and training.
Yadagiri Rao, a sports specialist at GHMC, stressed that the Ministry of Sports offers a wide variety of job opportunities that can accommodate candidates without formal education for high-quality people.
During the meeting, several trans NGO representatives shared insights on the delivery of training through the Skills Development Centre and detailed ongoing programs, market links, and support through training institutions.
