Goal killed by coal train in Bhadradri Kothagudem

Hyderabad: The dead Gower (Indian Bison) near railway tracks in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district found concerns from forest officials who said they would use Singaporeni Collieries Company Limited in the area to take advantage of wildlife safety issues along the railway.

The male and a male believed to be about five years old were believed to have died after a coal attack from a SCCL mine in Manuguru sometime Tuesday night. Officials say this is likely the first known incident in which the Goals were killed after being hit by a train.

The population of the Bhadadri Kothadugem area is nearly 2,000 gaur, a species protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Conservation Act. Nearly 1,900 of the majority of this population live in the Kinnerasani Wildlife Sanctuary in the area.

This is the second death of Gaur in Telangana this year. Another Gaur, who was trapped in the Yadadri-Bhongir district in January, died in rescue attempts near the village of Chinnakondur in the area.

Tuesday’s event was located near Kinnerasani and regularly used trains carrying coal from the SCCL mine. It is suspected that the animal may have been searching for water when it crossed the track and was hit by a train. An official said the incident happened in the evening.

As the trains carrying coal have a lot of movement, forest officials said they will cross the wildlife issues across the railway track with SCCL and railways to develop a system of possible safety measures for wildlife that cross the track.
