Inspired by the favorable Panchayat election results, the Democratic coalition led by Bharatiya Janata party is aiming to win 95 seats in the 2026 parliamentary elections held in Assam in 2026.
The BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have won 307 times out of 397 Zila Parishad seats in 27 regions. Congress filled 62, while other political parties and independents won 28 seats.
As the counting began, the BJP-AGP combine won 1,409 titles in 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat seats, followed by Congress with 122 seats and 41 other seats.
“The results reflect the belief in the BJP and our NDA partners. They inspired us to work harder in the 2026 parliamentary elections and we can win at least 95 seats,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters after the near sweep of the BJP and AGP.
He also said that the number of NDA seats in the 126-member Assam Parliament Assembly can reach 104.
The NDA won 75 seats in the 2021 General Assembly elections. After bias, the seat count increased to 84.
The Chief Minister also swiped on MP Gaurav Gogoi after Congress drew blanks in two eastern regions (Jorhat and Sivasagar) under his Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency. Congress’s performance in 12 other regions in eastern Assam is almost equally disheartening.
The BJP-AGP combine harvesters won 161 out of 167 Zila Parishad seats in eastern Assam. Congress has four seats.
The two-stage rural opinion poll is the first since Assam’s demarcation practice in 2023.
Assam BJP President and MP Dilip Saikia said the NDA government’s commitment to rural development “helps us secure more than 80% of Zila Parishad and Anchalik Parishad seats.
“The historic and decisive victory shows that the progress of people voting through Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accelerated,” he said.
