Government’s Language Advisory Committee urges CM Fadnavis to revoke Hindi relocation in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government’s Language Advisory Committee urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to revoke the decision to make Hindi a mandatory third language for students from level 1 to 5. The state government has agreed with the three-language formula under the national education policy. Therefore, this makes Hindi an essential for students in English and Marathi secondary schools.

In a letter to CM, the committee’s chief Laxmikant Deshmukh claimed that SCERT (State Education Research and Training Commission) did not consider their ideas and suggestions before making the Hindi push.

The letter said that although the Government has appointed a Language Advisory Committee to make recommendations on language matters, SCERT has not considered the group.
The letter said: “There is no mandatory language in the national education policy. Instead, the NEP states that education should be taught through the native language. Therefore, it is incorrect to use Hindi as a third language.”

It says that at any stage of education, Hindi should not be enforced. Instead, a policy should be adopted to use as little as possible in Hindi.

“This is not a language for employment, income, reputation or knowledge,” the letter said.
