Gulzar Houz Fire Accident: Pearl Merchant’s Legacy Burned Ashes, Three Generations Killed 17

On Sunday morning, Charminar looked as usual, with the usual sound of the blinds open permeating the air. Nearby, people were the first of the day. It all happened in a single arrow in the Modi family home, where 17 people died in the fire.

For decades, MODI has been an integral part of the region – a pearl merchant carrying the famous Poonamchand M. Poonamchand jeweler and pearl merchant.

Over the past four to fifty years, they have opened several street shops, and behind them, their houses have paved their homes and are barely noticeable from the road through narrow, dim driveways.

It opens up a central courtyard with skylights, surrounded by two floors of rooms with antique cement railings, each house with three generations of housing members. On other days, this is a photo of the United Family Resilience. It was hollowed out by the fire on Sunday.

At around 6 a.m., the family woke up and swallowed the thick smoke. Within minutes, crying drove residents from home and onto the street. Some shot the scene in shock, others took root. Ambulances, fire bidding and police patrol vehicles crossing the lane, breaking the morning calm.

The Modi family returned home at around 11pm on Saturday after a party at the house of Attapur’s son Govind. He urged them to stay overnight, but they chose to go home.

Living for 50 years

“The family has lived there for nearly 50 years. It’s a big joint family – about 20 people, including the elderly and children. The sisters also spent summer vacations at home with the kids these days. The house isn’t as big as that from the outside, but many live under that roof.”

Witnesses said some family members managed to escape and just returned inside to help others. They never came back. Captured by smoke and heat, only a narrow staircase guided upwards – no other escape – the family had little chance. Bicycles parked at the entrance provide more fuel for hell. By the time the firefighters arrived, 17 members, including children and elders, surrendered.

Another acquaintance said, “Pankaj is the eldest son – he is responsible for everyone.” “He did it once, went to ask for help, but went back. He fought until the end. But he died of suffocation… with the children, the elders. Everyone. Everyone.

Even though the smoke was still wandering in the alleys, the crowds gathered together, and many were stunned. Businessmen from Chamin area suspended their morning routine. Long-term customers, neighbors and old colleagues are incredible, looking around, eyes longing for clarity. By the afternoon, waves began to rush with relatives from all over the city.

Smoke and Silence

The Modi house is now just a burning frame, with its room filled with smoke and silence. There is a faint black smear above the entrance, which suggests the expansion inside. As the investigation continued, the city police blocked the area as the family prepared for the final ceremony at the Puranapul Crematorium.
