H-1B domestic visa renewal plan gains momentum

Hyderabad:The U.S. H-1B Domestic Visa Renewal Program will allow H-1B visa holders to renew their visas without leaving the United States. Seven members of Congress promised support for the program, which would help hundreds of thousands of Indian H-1B holders currently in the United States, as well as those planning to move there.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) noted in its data sheet that more than 200,000 h-1B visas will be awarded to Indians in 2024, a number increasing every year. From Hyderabad alone, thousands of H-1B visas are issued every month. In February 2025, a 3,218 H-1B visa was issued in Hyderabad.

Several members of the MP, including India – The original MPs supported the plan, including Suhas Subramanyam, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Rich McCormick, Henry Calvin Johnson, Don Bacon and Sanford Dixon Dixon Bishop Jr.

A letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked him to add other visa categories such as E (Business and Navigation Treaty), H (Temporary Worker), I (Reporter, Journalist and Film Staff), L (MNC Staff Transfers), O (e (Extraordinary Capabilities) and P Visas (E, Travel, or Tour, or Performance).

K. Sravani, an H-1B holder from Andhra Pradesh, who works in Michigan, said: “My husband and I are using the H-1B visa. When it is the visa renewal, we need to plan a trip across India. We have to leave off from get off work, take a vacation at their school, and most importantly, we have to sign with an undetermined, we have to identify a visit, we have to identify a visit.

She added: “Last time, we waited for weeks and were just a location in Chennai. The whole stamping work in India puts a lot of pressure on us. If the United States allows contract renewals across the country, it will provide greater stability for families like us.”
