Minoo Mumtaz was a famous dancer and character actor in the Hindi film industry in the 1950s and 1960s. Her brother Mehmood married Meena Kumari’s sister Madhu Kumari. Minoo and Mehmood saw the Howrag Bridge romance on the screen in the video, sparking public anger.
Born on April 26, 1942, Malikunnisa Ali is a dancer and actor Mumtaz Ali and Latif-un-nisa Ali, and seven other siblings, including the legendary comedian Mehmood, who are 10 years older than her. Mumtaz is an alcoholic, so the financial burden of the family falls on Mehmood and Malikunnisa. When Mehmood started working in the Hindi film industry with 1945’s movie Kismet as 11 child actors, Malikunnisa followed in his footsteps. She was so beautiful that director Nanubhai Vakil played a role for her in his 1955 film Sakhi Hatim, when she was only 13 years old. Minoo Mumtaz became a successful role actor and dancer in Bollywood in the 1950s and 1960s. In several famous films, she is in Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Yahudi, Ghungat, Taj Mahal, Ghar Basake Dekho, Sindbad Alibaba and Aladdin and Preet Na Jane Reet, among others.
During Minoo’s career, when she saw her brother Mehmood in the 1958 film Howrah Bridge, her brother Mehmood broke out in the song Gora Rang, Chunariya Kali. The sibling duo took this step because of their financial situation and had to face huge public anger and rebound.
Speaking of her personal life, Minoo married S. Ali Akbar’s director in 1963, and the couple had three daughters and a son. She decided to leave the film industry and focus on her marriage life. Before getting married, she worked during her pregnancy when she signed several movies such as Jahan Ara, Ghazal, Chitralekha and Gaban. In 2003, the experienced actress lost her short memory when she discovered a four-inch tumor in her brain. She received treatment in Toronto and recovered her memory. Her health has deteriorated over the years and Minoo Mumtaz finally passed away in a Canadian city on October 23, 2021.
