Plastic in Coca-Cola? Learn all this in more than 10,000 bottles recalled in these states

The recall of Coca-Cola currently affects products in Illinois and Wisconsin, but the company has not disclosed the end result of plastic in cans or damage to other batches.

Coca-Cola recalled 10,000 cans of raw flavored soda water due to potential plastic pollution. The affected products are for sale in Illinois and Wisconsin, and the recall was first announced on March 6, 2025 and was later classified as a Class II recall by the FDA on March 24, 2025. The classification suggests that consumption of contaminated tanks can have temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences that are considered distant despite serious health problems.

Milwaukee-based Reyes Coca-Cola Bottlement Co., Ltd. (LLC) voluntarily recalled 864 boxes of 12-piece Coca-Cola classic cases in 12-ounce jars distributed in Illinois and Wisconsin. The recall was initiated because the product did not meet the company’s high-quality standards.

“We are taking this voluntary action because for us, there is nothing more important than providing high-quality products to those who drink our drinks,” a spokesperson for Reyes Coca-Cola Bottled explained in a statement.

Affected products are for sale in retail stores in Illinois and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola has not issued a separate statement regarding the recall.

Although Coca-Cola recalls are not common, recent events are not an isolated incident. In December 2023, nearly 2,000 Coca-Cola products were recalled, including Sprite, Diet Coke and Fanta, due to concerns about foreign object pollution.

In early 2024, the Coca-Cola beverage produced in Belgium was removed from European shelves after excessive chlorate levels were detected, highlighting the possibility of Coca-Cola recall, prompting the company to take steps to address quality control issues and ensure consumer safety.

The recall of Coca-Cola currently affects products in Illinois and Wisconsin, but the company has not disclosed the end result of plastic in cans or damage to other batches. For precautions, consumers in nearby states should check whether their product packaging has been marked as a specific UPC code.
