Heavy rains ruin life in Hyderabad, hail and tree waterfall reports

On Friday evening (18 April 2025), unexpected thunderstorms caused severe damage in several areas of Hyderabad, catching commuters off guard, causing trees to fall and causing massive road flooding in several places. Hail has also been reported in several places like Begumpet. Due to the incident in Tree Fall, electricity supply in some areas has been temporarily damaged.

There was no sign of heavy rain on the day, but it turned cloudy and wet around 4 pm, causing strong winds and dust storms in several places soon after. At around 5 p.m., the rain began to slam the eastern and southern parts of the city and gradually spread to other parts. It poured for an hour in a row, recording the heaviest rainfall in Charminar, Bandlaguda and Nampally Mandals.

The highest rainfall recorded in Bandlaguda exceeded 8 cm, at 7 pm, followed by Bahadurpura, which was nearly 8 cm. According to statistics obtained from the city’s automatic weather stations, Charminar obtained 7.6 cm and naply 7 cm.

Bahadurpura, Amberpet, Khairatabad, Qutbullahpur, Asifnagar, Balanagar, Rajendranagar, Saidabad, Himayatnagar, Saroornagar, Saroornagar, Musheerabad, Hayatnagar and other areas also received considerable rainfall.

Begumpet residents posted information on social media about hail in the area, and Begumpet’s subway train station was reportedly closed for commuters for a brief period as the lobby area was filled with rain. The flooding was also severe, near the nearby Chicoti Gardens area.

It is also reported that water supply has been carried out from the Bahadupra intersection, Chintalkunta, Shilparamam, Rajbhavan Road, Erragadda, Basheerbagh, Koti and other locations. Tree falls were reported from multiple locations, including Kachiguda, MGBS, Bahadurpura, Minister Road, near Secretariat, Saroornagar, Vijaynagar Colony, Kukatpally, Darussalam, High Court, BN Reddy Nagar, Sultan Bazar, Sindhi Colony, Methodist Colony and Chirag Ali Lane, leading to long power cuts. A part next to Talli, partially blocking the ascending ramp, blocking the road of the vehicles.

Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency said 60 tree waterfalls were reported in various areas of the city.

Traffic police and the Nine Heads work overtime to clear down fallen trees and branches to promote traffic, while GHMC workers work hard on water supply issues. Although it was a holiday, traffic stopped at multiple locations due to tree waterfalls and slowly moved in many other extensions.
