Hilltop villagers plan to protest horseback protests on MGNREGA work

Visakhapatnam: 14 families in Cheemalapadu Panchayat, Ravikamatham Mandal, are scheduled to hold a horseback protest at the MPDO office on May 24, demanding employment under the MGNREGA program. Despite holding a job card, these residents in remote mountaintop villages were denied work even if the woodland champions were available for employment.

There was no MGNREGA job within a radius of ten kilometers, and some villagers were forced to ride horses to work in distant areas, only returning after a exhausted journey. Despite employment opportunities on the land under Mgnrega, administrative actions have prompted many to seek employment on poultry farms on the plains.

Repeated appeals to regional collectors have not been answered. “Our villages should provide MGNREGA’s work. We also need better roads to connect with Jeelugulova and Sompurambandhu. The lack of access is worsening our struggles.” Tribal leaders including Kilo Suribabu and K. Govinda Rao supported his request.

If their requests remain ignored, villagers are ready to bring the protests to the streets of MPDO offices, symbolizing their frustration over the delays in the implementation of MGNREGA. The campaign highlights the urgent need for government intervention in rural employment and infrastructure.
