Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha directed officials to take strict action against private hospitals that perform harmful caesarean sections. The minister stressed the need to curb unnecessary caesarean sections, called for stricter audits and re-enabling efforts to promote normal delivery.

At a review meeting held Thursday, the minister said it is necessary to share awareness of the risks of natural delivery and cesarean section procedures with pregnant women and their families from the early stages of prenatal care. To increase the quantity of normal delivery, he also recommends midwife training for nurses working in government sanitation facilities.

The minister stressed the need to strengthen infrastructure in maternal and child health care centres and urged officials to create conditions to encourage women to choose to give birth in government hospitals.

The minister also asked about the ongoing recruitment process at government hospitals. Officials told him that more than 8,000 positions had been filled last year and that the process of filling out more than 6,200 posts is currently being processed.
