What is a ceasefire?
A ceasefire is a temporary cessation of hostilities or armed conflicts between opposition parties, usually agreeing to fight for a specific period or purpose. When both sides agree to stop, when one side stops fighting or mutually, it may be unilateral. Ceasefires are often used in wars, insurgents or border conflicts, such as ongoing India-Pakistan tensions to reduce violence, achieve negotiations or meet humanitarian needs.
India and Pakistan agree to a joint ceasefire, no fire of any form of artillery, missiles or any weapon will be allowed.
Ceasefire agreement and history of violations between India-Pakistan
1965: After the 1965 India-Pakistan War, a ceasefire was agreed. The war is about a dispute between Kashmir, both claiming their power. Pakistan attempted to enter Jamu and Kashmir, starting a rebellion against India with its actions in Gibraltar.
To end the 1965 Indian-Pak War, the Tashkent Declaration or the Tashkent Agreement was signed on January 10, 1966 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This is a peaceful treaty between the two countries.
2003: Indians have since begun a ceasefire after the latter announced a unilateral ceasefire on November 26, 2003. It follows the Line of Control (LOC) in Jamu and Kashmir
2021: India and Pakistan issued a joint statement on February 25 to fully comply with all agreements for the ceasefire of the LOC and other sectors. The agreement became possible after post-channel talks by India’s national security adviser Ajit Doval and Pakistan’s civilian military leadership.
2025: After the Pahargam terrorist attack, terrorists killed about 26 civilians (mainly terrorists) on April 22, India launched Operation Sindor and attacked various terrorist camps in Pakistan, before escalating tensions after continuing drone and other military attacks. The shootings were terminated after a few hours of agreeing to Pakistan’s breach.
Many ceasefire violations occurred along the LOC, witnessing 5,133 ceasefires in 2020, killing 22 civilians and 24 security personnel. There were 591 fire exchange violations in January and February 2021.
How does a ceasefire work?
Under the current mechanism, a Brigadier General’s official held a phone call with his peers on the DGMO office every week. Any problem, the emergency level of emergency pending can be resolved through telephone conversations. Since then, DGMOs of the two countries have regularly held dialogues through the hotline and reviewed the situation of LOC and international borders to “comply with all understandings and agreements between the two armies.”
