ICC may implement a new points system for the next cycle of the World Test Champions, where bonus points can be found

The International Cricket Commission (ICC) may consider various suggestions, including a potential introduction of a reward point system, to reward teams with victories.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a new reward points system for the upcoming World Exam Champions cycle, which begins in June with a trip to England in India. The proposed system is intended to give greater value to greater victories, especially those obtained overseas. Under current rules, a team wins 12 points, regardless of the margin, while a draw or tie wins four and six points respectively.
However, the ICC is exploring the possibility of winning points for winning, such as 100 runs. If implemented, this change will motivate the team to strive for major performance, especially under challenging conditions.
“In fact, issues such as this have been discussed since the beginning of the WTC, because many teams believe that the due attention does not win with large teams. So such topics are part of the discussion and this may be considered again,” a source told PTI.
An ex-Indian player said on anonymously: “Yes, it’s a good move if it does happen. The team will be more motivated to get results because we can see some exciting games.”
What other changes can ICC bring?
The ICC is also considering a system that will earn more points for opponents who are strong. This means winning against a team like Australia or India will be higher than winning against a lower ranking team.
This change could greatly enhance England’s chances of qualifying for the WTC finals. England often plays against India and Australia, and this system rewards victory over top teams will give them a great advantage.
Under the revised points system, New Zealand’s 3-0 Test Series defeat in India last year will earn them more points. This is because the proposed system will take into account the strength of the opponent, which makes winnings with top teams like India even more valuable. Currently, while New Zealand faces much greater challenges, New Zealand’s victory is worth the same as England’s 3-0 home win against the West Indies.
To increase competition, the ICC is also considering reward points for leaving victory. This will encourage teams to prioritize overseas series and invest more in preparing for challenging conditions. The goal is to create more parity in international cricket matches and ultimately improve the quality of the test matches.
In addition to the bonus points rules, the ICC has also reviewed the current WTC format, which some people believe is unfairly superior to certain teams. South Africa’s qualifications in the 2025 final sparked the debate as critics pointed out their schedule, which was their test series against Australia and England, a factor in their relatively easy access to the finals. Potential changes in the WTC format are being discussed to address these perceived imbalances.
