India, Sri Lanka discusses fishermen issues; Colombo is about to release 11 fishermen: Foreign Secy Misri | World News

Colombo: A large number of discussions between India and Sri Lanka, with the Sri Lankan authorities informing India that they have decided to release 11 fishermen “on the horizon”, according to Foreign Minister Vikram Misri.

Speaking about a special briefing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka on Saturday, Misri said in a meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the issue and suggested that some recent actions taken to Sri Lanka could be done.

The Foreign Minister said on the issue of fishermen: “Yes, this is a topic that has been discussed quite detailed between the two sides. This is an always characteristic of discussion at all levels, including the highest level between the two sides. Earlier in the day, PM Modi and Dissanayake held bilateral meetings and delegation-level talks in Colombo. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Minister Vikram Misri and other officials attended the meeting.

PM Modi has received a historic welcome in Independence Square in Colombo. This is the first time Sri Lanka respects visiting leaders in this way.

PM Modi paid a state visit to Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6 at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Disanayaka. His arrival in Colombo on Friday marks his first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019.
