Cygni Energy, headquartered in Hyderabad, opened a 4.8 GWH battery energy storage system (Bess) Gigafactory on Wednesday (Wednesday, April 30, 2025) at E-Mobility Valley, an electronics manufacturing cluster in Maheshwaram near the city.
IIT-Madras has incubated the energy storage engineering and manufacturing company and has established a 1,60,000 square foot factory on a five-acre campus with an investment of Rs 100 crore.
In the first phase, the three lines are running, and in the second phase, the capacity of Gigafactory will be increased to 10.8 GWH and an additional 6 GWH will be added to the existing plant, with an additional investment of Rs 15 billion.

Founder and CEO Venkat Rajaraman will generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect work in these two phases.
The facility will produce high-capacity battery packs for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Advanced BESS systems will cater to large grid-scale fixed storage projects and independent power producers (IPPs). The company offers 1 GWH orders from BESS developers and automotive customers.
As part of the proposed expansion, the company will add three automated two GWH cell manufacturing lines and container integration facilities to meet the growing demand for fixed and electronic power storage applications, Cygni Energy said in a press release.
“We plan to grow exponentially in energy storage in India and internationally in the coming years,” Rajaraman said. In addition to seed funding from IIT Madras, the company raised $6.5 million in 2018 and $12.5 million in 2022, he said.
