All 13 defendants in the murder of Mershidabad’s father are locals, some of whom know

Most of the defendants in the murder of Moshidabad’s father were locals known to the victim and his family, senior police officers in West Bengal told Hindu On Tuesday (May 13, 2025).

West Bengal police arrested for the 13th in connection with the Jafrabad murder on Tuesday. The defendant Yusuf Sheikh is a resident of Dighri Village in the same area. He was arrested by the nearby Suti Police Department area.

A month ago, on April 12, father-son duo Harogobind Das and Chandan Das were dragged out of their home in Jafrabad, Samsherganj Police Department District, Murshidabad, allegedly being brutally murdered in public violence.

In addition, on April 11 and April 12, mobs protesting the recently passed WAQF (Amendment) Act (2025) were also destroyed and destroyed real estate and vehicles in the area, forcing many residents of Dhulian Municipality in Samsherganj and Tinpakuria Gram Panchayat to force many residents.

West Bengal police added on Tuesday that all 13 defendants involved in the murder so far are locals in the area, most of whom are under 35 years old.

About two of them were arrested from Odisha, three were arrested from Jharkhand, and the rest were arrested from different parts of West Bengal.

“The family that lost a loved one has identified six people, four of whom were nominated in the first information report. However, due to the traumatic nature of the crime, they may have known more people but may not be able to register their identities at this time,” the official said.

He added that the defendant carried a stick and a sword during the violence. The annoying weapon used in the murder was a sharp sword-like weapon that bent towards 90 degrees on the top, the officer said. The so-called murder weapon has been recovered by the police.

Currently, several suspects have been detained in judicial custody, while the recently arrested suspect has been detained by police.

“The first arrest was conducted on April 15. All defendants were charged with murder, but the police prayed to the court to add more Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, especially the mob-related departments,” the police said.
