In the turbulent Pakistani army: CJCSC reportedly detains army chief Asim Munir, officer demands resignation | Indian News

According to sources familiar with the matter, in a highly dramatic development of Pakistan’s military institutions, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza reportedly had reportedly detained Army Chief Asim Munir. This move, if confirmed, would send out unprecedented internal discord in the highest level of the Pakistani army.

General Munier will be held in an undisclosed location and may be charged with treason in military court, sources said.

In parallel development, a group of senior and middle-level officials, including the colonel, professional and captain, issued a strongly worded letter asking General Munier to resign immediately. The letter accused Munir of abusing the military to suppress political opposition, interfering in elections, stifling the press and exacerbating the country’s ongoing crisis.

Comparing the events that led to the division of East Pakistan in 1971 with the establishment of Bangladesh, officials cited economic collapse, growing public dissent, and like the recent train hijacking in Bal Luchistan, are signs of worsening under Munier’s leadership.

The officer demanded the transfer of control to a council of senior military officials to safeguard the agency’s credibility, warning that if Munir did not resign voluntarily, he would be forcibly removed.

This rare public rift in the Pakistani army coincides with rising unrest across the country and speculations that the possibility of release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan could mark an important political and military turning point.
