India could export up to 800,000 tons of sugar this season: Food Minister Sanjeev Chopra

India is the world’s leading sugar-producing producer and may export up to 800,000 tons of sugar, down from the allowed quota of 1 million tons for the 2024-25 season to September, a senior government official said Thursday. A senior food ministry official said that the country has shipped 300,000 tons of sugar so far, and about 60,000 tons of ports are being transported.
“We will export 800,000 tons from the total allowable quota,” Food Minister Sanjeev Chopra said in a press conference.
The Ministry of Food estimates that the Ministry of Food’s total sugar production in the ongoing 2024-25 season is 2.6 million tons, most of which have been produced by Mills.

The country has completely restricted exports in the past 2023-24 season due to domestic supply issues. In January, exports are allowed this season.
