Poor crew management, seat belt negligence is linked to SpiceJet turbulent death

The accident occurred in SpiceJet Flight SG 945, which runs on the Mumbai-Degapur route. The plane encountered severe turbulence, throwing many passengers out of their seats. Despite 189 passengers and six crew members on board, the turbulent consequences resulted in one passenger’s death, three others suffered serious injuries and several more severe injuries.

The AAIB report noted that crew members failed to avoid areas with bad weather and prone to occur. The survey shows that the crew did not comply with the necessary safety protocols, which would ensure better protection for passengers. In particular, cabin staff were unable to verify that passengers had their seat belts fixed in time, which caused harm in the event of turbulence attacks. The lack of pre-development briefings on the weather conditions of cabin crews further exacerbates this because it affects their ability to properly protect the cabin.

In its final report, AAIB recommended that the Civil Aviation Administration (DGCA) ensure that its officials comply with the Airworthiness Manual (APM) guidelines when clearing the aircraft for cancellation, especially in cases involving accidents. DGCA returns the Boeing 737-800 aircraft to its lessor without the necessary AAIB permission.

In addition, the report highlights the need for passengers to recognize the importance of seat belt use, recommending safety campaigns for DGCA, airport operators and airlines. SpiceJet is also urged to implement repetitive defect monitoring and control procedures more strictly.

The report reminds the critical role of crew management and passenger transport cooperation in ensuring aviation safety.
