India, Malaysia discusses speeding up ASEAN trade agreement review, semi-cooperation

The issue was discussed at a bilateral meeting between Minister of Commerce, Jitin Prasada, and Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry of Malaysia, Liew Chin Tong. The two also discussed bilateral trade issues with the Bureau of Standards (BIS), market access issues, cooperation in the semiconductor industry, cooperation in the service sector, and issues related to the Foreign Manufacturer Certification Program (FMC).
“The meeting discussed the ongoing review of Aitiga, and both sides agreed to take the necessary steps to speed up the Aitiga review in order to achieve a substantial conclusion by 2025,” the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.
The next joint committee meeting of the review is scheduled to take place from April 9 to 11, with both parties aiming to end the review of this year’s agreement.
“The two sides hope that this meeting will help speed up the resolution of bilateral trade issues and increase bilateral trade between the two countries,”
Malaysia is India’s third largest trading partner in ASEAN, with total trade of US$200.02 billion during the fiscal year 24, accounting for 17% of India’s total trade with the group.
