India reports 2.1 million deaths in 2021 compared to 2020

India recorded over 10 million deaths in 2021 (the second year of death locked in 1921), which is about 2.1 million more than the death toll in 2020.

“In terms of registered deaths, the number of registered incidents has increased from Rs 8.12 lakh in 2020 to 102.2 million crore in 2021, which is an increase of 26.0 per cent,” the report said.

In 2019, the death toll was 7.59 million.

Other medical certificates for the cause of death prepared by RGI have reported that the number of deaths in Covid-19 increased from 1,60,618 in 2020 to 4,13,580 in 2021, including 2,67,363 men, including 2,67,363 men, 1,46,46,215 females and two transgender thresserities.

In 2021, as many as 2,395,128 were medically certified deaths, with 5,83,440 more deaths than in 2020.

According to the report, a total of 5,74,198 Covid-19 deaths were reported in 2020 and 2021. The Covid-19 dashboard maintained by the Union Health Department said the pandemic had 5,33,665 deaths as of May 5.

The report said that among the main cause group, circulatory diseases, including lung diseases, accounted for 29.8% of the total number of medically certified deaths, followed by 17.3% from Covid-19; 12.7% from respiratory diseases; and 6.1% from certain infectious and parasitic diseases.

Covid-19 is the second leading cause of death in 2021. This is the third largest cause of death in 2020.

Among the 32 States and Union Territories, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Delhi contributed significantly to the increased number of deaths registered from the report, 2020-2021.

The Civil Registration System reported that the number of registered births decreased by about 0.1% from Rs 24.22 lakh in 2020 to 24.2 million in 2021.
