India welcomes Russia’s proposal to negotiate directly with Ukraine

India welcomed Russia’s proposal to negotiate directly with Ukraine on Tuesday, saying it provided the two sides with the opportunity to address their concerns through “dialogue and diplomacy.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said India has been calling for “sincerity and practical” participation between Russia and Ukraine to resolve their ongoing conflict.

“India welcomes the proposal made by direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The negotiations provide the two sides with an opportunity to resolve their concerns through dialogue and diplomacy,” he said.
He added: “India has always advocated sincere and practical participation between Russia and Ukraine to ensure early and lasting peace.”

Jaiswal answered a question in a media briefing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on Thursday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. It is unclear whether Putin will go to Turkiye for negotiations or whether he represents someone. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Russian president will announce his decision in due time.

“Ukraine has always supported diplomacy. I am ready to come to Turkiye. Unfortunately, the world still hasn’t received a clear response from Russia to a lot of suggestions for the ceasefire,” Zelensky said on Monday.

The Trump administration has been reaching a ceasefire agreement for Ukraine and Russia.
