Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Trade Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw participated in the breakthrough ceremony of the T-8, the longest railway tunnel tunnel in India, the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line, connecting Devprayag to the Janasu district. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) achieved an important milestone at the 125-km Rishikesh-Karnprayag Broad Laur Project in Uttarakhand. The railway project is built within a 105km tunnel. There are 16 tunnels in total from Rishikesh to Karnaprayag. At this historic moment, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and Uttarakhand CM Dhami jointly arrived at the tunnel site and conducted inspections.
Rishikesh-Karnprayag Railway Project
The railway minister also said that work on the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway project is developing rapidly and operations of the railway line are expected to begin soon. The project will prove to be a milestone connecting the state’s hilly areas to the rail network. He said the 14.57km long railway tunnel (from Devprayag Saud to Janasu) is not only the longest in Uttarakhand, but also the tunnel in India.
He said that this is the first time TBM technology has built a railway tunnel in the country’s hilly areas, under the initiative of the central government. He said that at work, the speed and accuracy displayed by a single-screen rock TBM with a diameter of 9.11 meters sets a new global benchmark. The railway minister said the Rishikesh-Karnprayag project will connect major cities in Uttarakhand, such as Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Gauchar, Gauchar and Karnaprayag.
He said the project will reduce the journey from Rishikesh to Karnaprayag from seven hours to two hours. It will promote opportunities to access remote areas in all seasons and promote tourism and economic development in Uttarakhand. This is also an important step in completing the Char Dham Rail project, namely Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri.
The significance of the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway project
CM Dhami said the tunnel is a historical achievement in Uttarakhand’s development. “The Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway project will connect remote mountainous areas of the state with the rest of the country. It will not only make transportation easier for locals, but will also provide a new impetus for tourism, business and economic activities in the region.” He also said that the investigation into the Tanakpur Bageshwar railway project has also been completed and action will be taken as soon as possible.
