India’s most expensive film was made in 1997, much bigger than Pushpa 2, Kalki 2898 AD, RRR, and was rejected by Rajinikanth’s Amitabh Bachchan.

Although filming began in 1997, Marudhanayagam still couldn’t finish despite many attempts to restore the project. Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, who were proposed to play a major guest role in the film, rejected it.
Over the past few years, the film industry is making expensive large budget movies, including films like Baahubali, Pushpa 2, Kalki 2898 AD and RRR on a huge budget. Today, we will tell you about a movie made in 1997 and touted as the most expensive movie made in India during this period. The film directed and produced by Kamal Haasan, was rejected by superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth under his Raaj Kamal film International Banner and remains unreleased and unfinished. We are talking about the historical drama movie Marudhanayagam.
Marudhanayagam is co-written by Kamal Haasan and novelist Sujatha. They began working on the project in 1991 and announced in 1997 that Marudhanayagam proposed a budget of Rs 80 crore, with today’s terms, which is more than Rs 6 billion. Marudhanayagam is an ambitious project based on the life of 18th-century freedom fighter Marudhanayagam Pillai.
Although filming began in 1997, Marudhanayagam still couldn’t finish despite many attempts to restore the project. Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, who were proposed to play a major guest role in the film, rejected it. Titanic’s reputation Kate Winslet also acquired Marsha’s lead role in the film, which she refused to do.
Marudhanayagam is co-produced by Indian, French and British production companies and it is believed that if the film is released as expected, it will prove to be a bigger box office than Prabhas’ Baahubali 2.
Many reasons have emerged over the years as to why Marudhanayagam can never be completed. However, one of the main reasons is the failure of India’s nuclear test in the Bokland area in 1998. This reportedly angered the British government, causing the British production house to withdraw from the film. Kamal Haasan restored the film, and he was deeply attached to the project. But, so far, everything has been in vain.
