The Hyderabad Police Department has filed a lawsuit to cancel registration of 20 vehicles driven by minors. On Thursday (April 10), the department began writing to the Telangana Department of Transportation requesting the cancellation of the vehicles for 12 months, marking the first case to reach the stage under the city’s latest law enforcement drive.

The operation comes days after city police launched a new crackdown against minors behind the steering wheel. More than 300 cases have been booked since Monday, with traffic officials recording an average of 100-120 violations per day.

“After the court handled this case, we immediately forwarded the request to the RTA to cancel the registration of the vehicle,” Hyderabad Police Department Joint Chief (Traffic) D. JoelDavis. “These are non-trial cases, so the proceedings are fast. The individuals are brought in the local court and once the legal formalities are completed, we will file a lawsuit against the RTA. For 20 cases, action will begin today.”

The number of deaths more than doubled from three in 2023 to seven in 2024 after the disturbing accidents involving minor drivers. In 2025 alone, seven such accidents have been reported, resulting in three deaths and six injuries.

The move is supported by Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, which is responsible for the owner of the vehicle when it is found that a minor is driving. Penalties include fines, jail time, cancellation of vehicle registration and the eligibility of minors to apply for a driver’s license until the age of 25.

The official said law enforcement sent a clear message to parents and guardians that allowing minors to drive is not only illegal, but also has long-term consequences.
