Deven Bharti, an IPS official in 1994, currently serving as the Special Chief of Police of Mumbai, was appointed as the new police commissioner of Mumbai on Wednesday (30 April 2025).

Mr. Bharti will be in charge of the city’s top police officer from the current Vivek Phansalkar, who retired after 35 years of service.

An official said that while the state Department of Home Affairs issued an order regarding Mr. Barty’s appointment, the position has been demoted to an additional Director-General of Police (ADGP).

Traditionally, the coveted position of the Mumbai Police Chief has been the ADGP rating, but has been upgraded to the DG rating in several recent articles.

Prior to his tenure as Special Commissioner, he held various positions in the 50,000 police force in the metropolis, including serving as the Joint Police Commissioner (law and order), additional police commissioner (crime) and deputy police commissioner (crime).

During his long career, he has also led the Maharashtra Counter-Terrorism Squad (ATS), in addition to serving as Police Inspector General (Law and Order) at the State Police Headquarters.

Mr. Barty also served as the Central Representative before being assigned to the Mumbai Police.

Mr. Bharti is known for his investigative skills and is part of a number of high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, in which 166 people were killed.
