Claire Sapwell, 53, of Cromer, has been accepted twice in recent weeks. She was in the Acute Medical Department (AMI) from March 27 to March 30, and then was hospitalized at Easton Ward from April 6 to April 8. During her two stays, she was sent to her pillowcase as a replacement.
Claire Sapwell says staff admits pillows are hard
According to an EDP 24 report, Sapuwell said that it is totally ridiculous to have no pillows available. She added that when a person is hospitalized, they cannot get the best sleep because it is due to noise and disturbance. She noted that the makeshift pillow only made things worse, adding that she didn’t get much rest at all.
She further said she saw other patients using similar alternatives. She added that the hospital staff told her that the pillow was difficult.

Use blankets instead of pillows
This is not the first or isolated incident. Previously in 2022, patients had no pillows and gave them a rolling blanket. According to the report, a 70-year-old patient, Stephen Skipper, had to use a folded blanket when he was sent to AMI in March 2022. He received the pillow only after he was transferred to the Kimberley Ward.
His daughter Lisa expressed frustration when she was speaking on EDP 24 and said the situation was ridiculous. She added that her father told her on the phone that the nurse told him that it was a frequent occurrence throughout the hospital.
She reportedly suggested that local businesses might consider donating pillows to help the hospital. But officials say that is unnecessary.
Hospital response to patient complaints
According to the report, Emma Chapman, deputy chief nurse of NNUH, apologized to Sapwell and said it was not the standard that patients should have. She said the pillows will be rebuilt regularly since they disappeared.
Chapman added that they are adopting a variety of solutions to correct this, especially in the areas of emergency and assessment.
Hospital representatives also said patients or families who are concerned about care should contact the patient’s advice and contact services directly. The report added that deputies further explained that gifts must be restricted by preventing infection, health and safety checks.
Other UK hospitals have reportedly noticed a shortage of basic items such as pillows, and tourists sometimes bring pillows to their loved ones. However, these rules are not always accepted due to strict rules.
