Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir stressed on Tuesday the need to turn Pakistan into a “hard country”, asserting that the fight against armed forces is a “fight” against the country’s “survival”.
General Munier spoke at a high-level meeting of the National Security Committee of the Parliament that had been held for several days after Baloch militants hijacked a bus, killing 25 passengers.
National Assembly President Ayaz Sadiq presided over the in-camera meeting, which he convened at the suggestion of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review the security situation in the country.
At the meeting, the country’s highest civil and military leadership emphasized a unified political commitment to go all out against armed forces and terrorism.
General Munier said in his speech to the committee that the fight against the opposition was “a struggle for our survival and for our descendants.”
He called for better governance and to make Pakistan a “hard state” and asked: “Will we continue to sacrifice countless lives in a gentle state?” General Munier said: “For sustainable development, all elements of state power must live in harmony.”
He also asked: “How long will we continue to use the blood of Pakistan and the martyrs’ armed forces to fill the governance gap?” He said the importance of peace, and he said nothing is more important than the security of the country, as all its citizens attribute to Pakistan. “If this is this country, then that’s what we are.”
He also said those who believe they can weaken Pakistan through terrorism should know: “We will unite and defeat not only them, but all their facilitators.” Prime Minister Sharif, the main minister, leaders of different political parties, provincial chief ministers and governors attended the meeting.
Opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) refused to attend despite being invited by the government because it had met with the incarcerated founder Imran Khan before the meeting, but was not granted. Later, it also asked Khan to be invited to the meeting. During the six-hour meeting, the military leadership briefed the current security situation to the parliamentary committee.
According to Pakistan Radio, Prime Minister Sharif read out a statement unanimously adopted by the committee.
It noted that the committee members condemned the recent acts of terror in the strongest way, expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and reiterated the country’s unwavering determination to eliminate all its forms and manifestations of terrorism. It also commends the heroism and professionalism of security forces and law enforcement agencies in conducting counter-terrorism operations.
The declaration reads: “The Commission stresses the need for a national consensus to fight back terrorism, emphasizing strategic and unified political commitments to address this threat to the full force of the State.”
Committee members stressed the need for immediate implementation of the National Action Plan and Action AZM-I-ISTEHKAM (a counter-terrorism initiative) to remove terrorist networks, counter-logistic support, and dismantle the link between terrorism and crime.
They also call for the increasingly use of social media platforms by terrorist organizations to spread propaganda, recruit followers and coordinate their networks, and call for social media to be used for such purposes.
It said: “The Committee reiterates that any institution, individual or group will be allowed to conspire with hostile force to undermine peace and stability in Pakistan.”
This also regrets the lack of participation of some opposition members and reiterates that the consultation process in this regard will continue.
The opposition coalition led by PTI, Tehreek Tahaffuz-i-ayeen Pakistan (TTAP), is also away.
“The PTI founders should also be invited to such a meeting and no meeting will be of great significance,” said Mahmood Khan Achakzai, head of TTAP.
The serious situation in Pakistan requires a joint parliamentary meeting. [However]everyone should have the opportunity to speak at the joint meeting. ” he said.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif responded to the decision of PTI to not attend the security meeting, and the party is doing politics on this issue.
“PTI has proved today that Imran Khan is their first and last priority [and that the] The welfare and peace of the country are not important to them. ” Asif said on X.
The meeting was held after a few days of shaking on March 11, when terrorists belonging to the banned Bal Road Branch PLA hijacked a train with about 425 passengers in the Bolan area of Balochistan.
Last week, in addition to the Jaffar Express train incident and the attack on security caravans in Nushki area, rebels carried out several attacks on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, targeting police and other security groups.
Security situations appear to fluctuate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan Provinces, where terrorists belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the BLA have repeatedly attacked security personnel and civilians.
