“It feels like a wedding pass”: someone invited to pay before a friend’s marriage

Have you ever asked to pay for a friend’s wedding? It sounds strange that a person recently shared this experience on social media, which is attracting attention. The user posted a post on Reddit, telling how a friend reached out to ask for money, just before inviting him to the wedding.
“A few months ago, a friend of mine was getting married. I called him several times to help, but he never responded. Then, from the blue, he called me and it felt like he was selling him a pass for the wedding than actually invited me.” He also shared screenshots of the conversation with his friends.

He went on to say, “If he was just seeking help from cash, I wouldn’t mind – I’ve already planned to give a gift of about Rs 5,000. But the way he communicated felt like a deal. I didn’t know how to react. I ended up getting him 6,000 and caught Rs 6,000 and didn’t attend the wedding.”

The post sparked heated discussion online, with many sharing similar views.
One user joked: “Modern marriage requires modern dahej (doll).
Another asked frankly, “Why do you pay?” Others wrote, “It’s your money – paying for your luxury. You owe them nothing.”
A more reflective comment read: “You are because you want to pay. But, honestly, the wedding has already cost a lot of money and usually offers guests food and gifts. Nevertheless, Rs 6,000 is too much – especially when the invitation is so immoral, especially when what you say, he won’t even notice if you have a cut connection.”

“From where I came from, we donate to the families of the deceased even at the funeral. It’s financially burdening to feed a lot of people and make all arrangements. When the family is in trouble, we give money to support it. Again, we just do it for marriage. We just cover up the system in the name of shagun to make up for the representation of all people. Or closer friends and relatives.
