Residents of the Madrassi Camp (a slum cluster) in Jangpura, South Delhi, and CPI (M) leaders held a protest at the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday. The protesters were detained by police and released later that day. This was a few days after the Delhi Development Authority issued an eviction notice, transferring to the slum dwellers of the camp to Narera.
Residents protested under the CPI(M) banner to eviction notices sent to them, and they did not want to transfer to Narela, where other apartments were offered.
“In accordance with the policy of the Delhi government, we have raised the need to provide permanent housing nearby so that employment and children’s education for residents in Madrasi Camp is affected,” CPI(M) said in a statement.
Anurag Saxena, the party’s Delhi secretary, said about 120 people, including party leaders, were detained by police and taken to the Narera police station around 12pm, who were released before 5pm.
