Japan’s tariff envoy says we hope to hold a trade agreement within 90 days

Japan’s tariff envoy said in a conversation in Washington that the United States hopes to hold a trade deal in the current 90-day “countdown” tax.

“I know the United States wants to reach an agreement within 90 days. We want to do that as soon as possible,” Ryosei Akazawa said in Washington.

Japan is subject to a 10% benchmark tariff on most countries as well as for steeper taxes from automobiles, steel and aluminum.
Trump has suspended so-called reciprocity tariffs for 90 days in many countries, including Japan, which face another 24%, but imposes it on China.

Akazawa said he told the U.S. that Japan’s tariffs were “very regrettable” after talking with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.


“After explaining Japan’s impact on Japanese industry and the idea of ​​expanding investment and employment in Japan and the United States, I strongly ask the United States to review a range of tariff measures,” he said at the ministerial level. ” he said.

“Based on the results of this consultation, we will continue to work together as the top priority and full-scale government,” he said.
