Jharkhand center stands out on DGP

There was a constitutional stalemate in Jharkhand, with the state and the centre at Loggerheads in the continuation of DGP Anurag Gupta. Although the union’s interior ministry said Gupta’s term ended on April 30, the state government led by Hemant Soren insisted that he continues to set the stage for an unusual administrative crisis. The ministry said in a letter to the state’s chief secretary on April 22 that only the center has the right to expand services for IPS officials. But the state said Gupta was appointed under NSW rules revised earlier this year to bypass the Centre’s participation in selecting DGP participation.
Gupta was initially appointed as the proxy DGP on July 27, 2024. However, he was removed from office after the BJP complained during the state assembly elections. In the new process, after Elections, Gupta returns to DGP.
Under the revised norms, Jharkhand now has established its own DGP selection committee. The central government has not accepted the move.
