J&K government has identified 4,000 former military volunteers to protect vital infrastructure after Pahalgam terrorist attacks

New Delhi:In an important step towards community-based security and terrorist attacks on tourists by using Pahalgam terrorist attacks, Sainik Welfare Committee of Jamu & Kashmir has proposed a proposal to mobilize former waiters (ESMs) to protect vital infrastructure across alliance territories.

Officials say the proposal has now been formally approved by the J&K government, laying the foundation for unique collaboration between veterans and civil authorities.

About 4,000 volunteers have been identified for the former volunteers. “Of course, 435 of them have licensed personal weapons, greatly improving the ability to respond effectively to local security situations,” said senior officials. These ESMs will be used to protect critical infrastructure in all 20 areas of J&K, including power plants, bridges, government installations and other vulnerable groups.

The initiative was based on a previous successful establishment during the 19th pandemic, where 2,500 retired personnel volunteered to support the government. The increase to 4,000 reflects the growing service spirit among veterans and the trust that the government and local people have in them.

As outlined in the proposal, ESM volunteers will serve under the overall coordination of Sainik Welfare Officers (DSWOS) in various regions. They will coordinate closely with the regional government and local police. Their role is non-combatants, focusing on static guard duties, based on presence deterrence and local coordination. The unified and basic equipment will be provided through the Sainik Welfare Commission and with administrative support from the regional authorities. Training and targeted plans are being planned to ensure standardized behavior and efficiency.
